How to Choose the Correct Wall Decal Size
Getting the proportions right for a clean and balanced look
Choosing the right wall decal is only half the job. Getting the size right is what makes it look intentional rather than out of place. Too small and it disappears into the wall. Too large and it can overwhelm the space.
The good news is that with a few simple checks, you can find the perfect fit for your room.
Start With Your Wall Space
Before anything else, take a good look at the wall you are working with.
Measure the width and height of the available space, not just the full wall. Think about what sits around it such as beds, sofas, desks or cabinets. Your decal should fit comfortably within that area rather than stretching edge to edge.
A helpful guide is to let your decal take up around two thirds of the available wall space. This keeps things balanced and visually pleasing.
Consider the Furniture Around It
Wall decals rarely sit on empty walls. Most of the time, they are placed above furniture.
If you are positioning a decal above a bed, couch or cabinet, aim for the decal to be slightly narrower than the furniture below. This creates a neat and anchored look.
For example, if your bed is two metres wide, a decal around one point two to one point six metres wide will usually feel well proportioned.
Think About the Purpose of the Room
Different rooms call for different approaches.
In bedrooms and nurseries, larger decals such as trees, animals or name designs can create a strong focal point and add warmth to the space.
In living rooms or hallways, you might choose something more subtle or spread across a wider area, such as a quote or a series of smaller elements.
In offices, decals are often sized to be readable and clear without dominating the space.
Feature Wall or Accent Detail
Ask yourself what role the decal is playing.
If it is a feature wall, go bigger. A larger design will draw attention and define the room.
If it is an accent, keep it smaller and more refined. This works well in kitchens, bathrooms or smaller rooms where space is limited.
Allow for Breathing Room
One of the most common mistakes is placing a decal too close to edges, ceilings or corners.
Leave some space around the design so it can stand on its own. This breathing room helps the decal feel intentional and prevents the wall from looking crowded.
Use Tape as a Guide
A simple trick is to map out the size of your decal using masking tape on the wall.
This gives you a real world preview of how the decal will look before you commit. You can step back, adjust the size and position, and make sure it feels right in the space.
